Pastels are pure powdered pigment mixed with very little binder & made into sticks, pans, or pencils. These are the same pigments that are used to make oil and watercolor paints. Having very little binder enables them to be very rich and vibrant.
Pastels will last an incredibly long time with proper care. They are one of the most permanent art mediums in existence and are actually superior to oils in which they will not crack or darken over time and are every bit as enduring. I pair the use of my pastels with a unique French made surface called Pastelmat. Pastelmat is a 360gsm premium, acid-free archival card surface that has the ability to hold the soft pigment particles in place.
The portraits within this section were created entirely from Pan Pastels and Pitt Pastel pencils on Clairefontaine Archival quality Pastelmat.
