Colored Pencils are probably the most well known of art mediums. There is a marked difference between brands, core types, and grades of lightfastness. Lightfastness is a property of a colourant such as dye or pigment that describes how resistant to fading it is when exposed to light, it is calibrated by the manufacturers using a rating system. I use only high quality, professional artist grade colored pencils, mostly Faber Castell Polychromos made in Germany and the Swiss made Caran’dache Pablo. I pair this with a French made type of surface called Pastelmat. Pastelmat is a 360gsm premium, acid-free archival card surface that have the ability to withstand the many layers that are required to create depth and vibrancy in an artwork.
